SIMON BERGSMANN'S DESCENDANTS
(THROUGH HERSCHEL)
Genealogical Information
First
generation
1. Simon Bergsmann. Born, 1812, in Krempachy,
Austria-Hungary. Died, 1 May 1892,
in Osturna,
Austria-Hungary. Burial in Spisska Stara Ves. Occupation: farmer/miller.
We know that Simon had at least one brother, since Simon's son
Hermann married the daughter of Simon's brother. The existence today of other Bergsmanns or their descendants in
the USA, descended from Bergsmanns in the Spis region but not descendants of
Hermann, also attests to the existence of other Bergsmanns contemporaneous with
Simon and Hermann.
Simon lived in Osturna, a tiny mountain village literally at the
end of the road, in rolling foothills of the High Tatra mountains. The village has been so stagnant
economically that in the 1990s it has been "discovered" by
conservationists because of its antique nature. Many of the houses are log cabins in the traditional Slovak
style, and many of these have been purchased and are being restored as weekend
retreats for urban Slovaks.
He married Netti Einhorn. Born, before
1825 (?). Burial in Spisska Stara Ves.
Children:
+ 2
i. Hermann (Herschel).
Second
generation
2. Hermann (Herschel) Bergsmann. Born, 1840,
in Folvark, Austria-Hungary. Died, 3
Apr 1914, in
Spisska Stara Ves. Burial in Spisska
Stara Ves. Occupation: farmer, miller.
We do not know anything about any other children Simon may have
had in addition to Herschel. That is
why this chapter is titled "Simon Bergsmann's Descendents (thru
Herschel)"; all we really have is Herschel, his parents Simon and Netti,
and his descendents. We think that we
have all or most of Herschel's descendents.
He married Hanni (Hany) Bergsmann, 19
Jul 1864, in Vigoda, Austria-Hungary.
Born, 1844,
in Slovenska Ves, or Vigoda. Died, 1936. Burial in Spisska Stara Ves.
Hani was Herschel's first cousin; she was the daughter of a
brother of Simon Bergsmann. Thus the
marriage of first cousins or other relatives, common in the US in the third and
fourth generations and not unknown in the fifth, is noted in the second
generation, in Europe, in 1864. It's
definitely a family tradition.

4. Jacob Bergsmann. Born, 1868, in Spisska
Stara Ves, Austria-Hungary. Died, 1946, in
Wilkes-Barre,
PA. Burial in Ohav Zedek cemetary., near Nanticoke, PA. Immigration:
circa 1886,
in New York. Occupation: miner/grocer.
My grandfather Jacob Bergsmann I remember as a short, portly man,
wearing a goatee, quite religious. He
came to the US at age around 16; had little education and probably no English
at the time. My father says that the
reason Jacob went to north-eastern Pennsylvania was because he had an uncle
there, named Morris. We don't know
anything more of this uncle. Jacob's
first job was as a coal miner; he then worked as a street paver in Wilkes-Barre
and subsequently moved to Glen Lyon, opened a grocery store, and lived there
for a good long time.
Glen Lyon, where my father Meyer was born and raised, is today
virtually a ghost town at the end of a road in the mountains some 15 miles
south-west of Wilkes-Barre. Around 1992
my cousin Olga Nagelova took me on a tour of the Spis region in Slovakia, where
Jacob had been born and raised. Among
the many towns we visited where our ancestors had lived and died was
Osturna. The road to Osturna rises
through a beautiful countryside, turning around the hills and getting narrower
as it goes. Osturna is a one-street
town; houses and barns on either side of the road; no cross streets. When the road gets to the high end of the
town, it just stops. Halfway through
Osturna it struck me that I had been somewhere like it before -- Glen
Lyon! Although Glen Lyon does have some
cross streets, and is uglier than Osturna, I found the small, economically
depressed, tiny town at the end of the road similarities to be striking. Wilkes-Barre and its spatial relationship to
Glen Lyon also have many similarities to Spisska Stara Ves and its relationship
to Osturna. Jacob settled somewhere
rather similar to the place he had left.
He married Pearl (Pepi) Bergsmann in or
near, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Born,
before 1883,
in Spisska Stara Ves. Died, 1907, in Glen Lyon, PA.
Pepi and Jacob were both born and raised in or near Spisska Stara
Ves and were first cousins. We don't
know Pepi's ancestry. Jacob came to the
US first; Pepi followed and they were married.
It's not known to what extent this marriage had been arranged before the
immigration; however, there is an interesting story regarding a marriage that
Jacob did not make – see under the record of his daughter Eva and her husband,
Henry Weinstock.
Pepi died five years after the birth of her sixth child, Meyer. (One died in infancy and is not listed
here.) Jacob married a second time, to
a widow whose last name was Frankel and who had two children, Blanche and
Jules, who kept the Frankel name but then grew up in the Bergsmann extended
family in the Wilkes-Barre area.
Blanche married Abe Popky.

7. Jozef Bergsmann. Born, 1878, in Osturna,
Austria-Hungary. Died, 1939, in

During World War I Jozef Bergsmann sold his grocery store and
served as a soldier in Italy. He
returned in 1920, a partial invalid, and became a baker in Krompachy.
He married, first, Etela Guttman, before

Died, 1970, in Bratislava. Occupation: economist.
He married Helena (Ilusa) Weil. Born, 12
Nov 1910, in Debrecen, Hungary.
Resided,
1991, in Bratislava. Occupation: govt official. Children:
+ 37
i. Ernest.
14. Anna Bergsmann. Born, 1890. Died,
1938.
She married Emanuel Bergmann, before
1912. Born, 1887. Died, 1943,
in
Wilkes-Barre, PA. Occupation: paint/hardware.
Emmanuel (Manny) Bergmann was related to the Bergsmann family into
which he married. Twice. He first married Anna, the eldest of Jacob
Bergsmann's children, and they had six children. After Anna's death he married her youngest sister Esther; they
had no children. Esther also
pre-deceased him; he then made the mistake of marrying someone who was not
related to him and this marriage ended in divorce -- probably the first divorce
among the Bergsmann/Bergmann family in Pennsylvania. I was a child at the time and never learned anything of the
reasons for the divorce; I do remember the family being just slightly
scandalized, upon meeting the third wife ("Mattie") and finding that
she smoked cigarettes. (An explanation
to younger readers: the reaction to smoking
had nothing to do with good health
habits but rather with unladylike behavior!)
Children:
38
i. Pearl. Born, 1913. Resided,
1991, in 1214 Ave L, Brooklyn, NY
11230. She married, first,
Philip Gelb, before 1966 (?), in
Wilkes-Barre PA. She
married, second, Raphael Persky, after
1967.
Pearl, the eldest child of Manny and Anna, stayed single for some
time, working in the family paint and hardware business and keeping house for
her father in his single periods. After
Manny's death, Pearl married a widower who was more or less her brother-in-law;
Phil Gelb was the brother of Abe Gelb, husband of Pearl's sister Mimi. Phil passed away, and so did Pearl's younger
sister Rose; subsequently Pearl married Rose's widower, her brother-in-law Ray
Persky. Happily, both Pearl and Ray are
alive as of this date.
Pearl is my oldest cousin; the first grandchild of Jacob and Pepi
Bergsmann. I am the youngest. Counting the children of Jules Frankel and
Blanche Frankel Popky, not blood relatives but very much family members, there
were 14 cousins -- as well as more distant uncles, cousins, etc. beginning with
my great-uncle Max Bergsmann, and some of his children and grandchildren. My childhood memories are full of growing up
in that extended family of Bergsmanns/Bergmanns in Wilkes-Barre, nurtured not
only by aunts and uncles but perhaps even more by my cousins, all of whom were
considerably older than I and functioned much more as aunts or uncles rather
than as cousins.
+ 39
ii. Herman.
+ 40
iii. Morris.
+ 41
iv. Rose.
+ 42
v. Miriam.
+ 43
vi. Harold.
15. Eva Bergsmann. Born, 1898, in Glen Lyon,
PA.
She married Henry Weinstock. Born, 1898.
Died, after 1964 (?).
Occupation:
tailor.
There is a story, of which I have two slightly different
versions: Back in Spisska Stara Ves,
Jacob Bergsmann -- Eva's future father -- wanted to marry a certain young lady
(whose name I don't have). His mother Hani
vetoed the match, according to one version because the young lady's family was
too poor. (They must have been very
poor!) Jacob went to the US, his cousin
Pepi also, and they married there.
The poor young lady back in Europe married a man named Weinstock.
Some time later, this lady asked her son, Henry Weinstock, to visit
Wilkes-Barre and look up her old suitor Jacob Bergsmann. Henry did so, thus meeting Jacob's daughter
Eva and, as we see, marrying her.
If all long-time Jewish residents of Spisska Stara Ves were
related, as seems likely, then Henry Weinstock too was marrying within the
family...
My uncle Henry was very kind to me. He lived in Brooklyn in the days when the Dodgers baseball team
resided there, and he took me to games when we visited. He procured for me a baseball autographed by
about a dozen Dodgers, which 45 years later I still have and keep on my
dresser. I'm told it's worth several
hundred dollars, but I'd rather have the memory of Uncle Henry.
Children:
+ 44
i. Pearl.
+ 45
ii. Eleanor.
16. Lillian Bergsmann. Born, 1899, in Glen
Lyon, PA.
She married Jack Mackson. Born, circa
1899, in Russia. Occupation:
storekeeper.
Children:
+ 46
i. Murray.
18. Meyer Bergsman (originally "Bergsmann;"
never legally changed). Born, 19
Sep 1902, in
Glen Lyon, PA. Died, 6 Jul 1989, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Occupation:
salesman.
He married Alva Beatrice Faerber,
daughter of Leon Faerber and Etta
Englander,
circa 1930, in Camden, NJ. Divorce, circa 1954, in Reno, Nevada.
Born, 22 Jul
1910, in Trenton, NJ. Died, 16 Nov 1992, in Silver Spring, MD.
Occupation:
bookkeeper.
Alvas's parents were first cousins. Her maternal grandmother, Aaron Englander's wife, was the sister
of Joel Faerber, Alva's paternal grandfather.
My parents met each other when Leon Faerber, in his constant quest
to earn a living, moved to Glen Lyon and opened a grocery store (in competition
with my other grandfather-to-be, Jacob Bergsmann!). This venture, in partnership with a gentleman named Peterfreund,
did not do well and Leon took the family back to New Jersey. (He always advised me never to enter into a
partnership.) But Meyer and Alva stayed
in touch and subsequently married.
Children:
+ 47
i. Joel.
19. David Bergsmann. Born, 30 Mar 1899. Died,
13 Feb 1969, in Oakland, CA.

28. Alexander (Sandor) Bergsmann (Horsky).
Born, 28 Sep 1909, in Spisska Nova Ves.
Died, 1994,
in Bratislava. Occupation: banker.
Sandor and his half-brother Jeno were among the fortunate minority
of Bergsmanns still resident in Europe to survive the holocaust. For a time this required living in caves in
the Carpathian mountains. Jeno, and
possibly Sandor, fought as a guerilla with Polish irregular forces against the
Germans -- until the Poles turned on their Jewish colleagues...
Sandor and Jeno both changed their last name from Bergsmann to
Horsky (which has much the same connotation in Slovak that Bergsmann does in
German).
He married Alzbeta Beck, 1943. Born, 14
Apr 1918, in Levoca,
Czechoslovakia.

I have been lucky enough to meet Herbert, and his son Peter and
Grandson Paul, in Prague. I missed
meeting my second cousin Steffania (Steffka); she was sick and in hospital the
first time I met the family and passed away before I returned. I did have one very nice conversation with
her on the phone.
Herbert fought in a free
Czech army unit (based from England) against the Nazis in World War II. After the war he and Steffka moved to Israel
but later returned to Czechoslovakia.
Peter (or Petr) Novotny, a large, energetic and engaging man, is a
musical entrepreneur; among his enterprises is a band specializing in country
and western music. They play original
c&w composed in the US, as well as their own compositions in the same
style. The band is quite successful and
has toured the US, playing at Nashville and elsewhere. I think of Peter as "the king of
country and western music of the Czech Republic."

Occupation: economist.
Named for my two maternal great-grandfathers, Joel Faerber and
Aaron Englander. My grandmother Etta
Faerber, née Englander, always addressed me as "Joel Aaron" and I
always hated having a middle name.
Don't ask why…
My parents were each the children of first cousins, but as far as
we know were not related to each other.
So the ubiquitous inbreeding of the Bergsmanns, related elsewhere in
this report, and the perhaps less intense exercise of that behavior by the
Faerbers and Englanders, were tempered by their mixture in my own DNA.

He married Natalie Ann Martina, 6 Nov
1991, in San Diego,
California. Born, 28 Sept. 1962 in Italy.
Jeremy may be the first of the Bergsman(n) clan to be born in
Brazil. When he, his mother and I left that country he was six months old but
already traveling under his own passport.
We left from a small sleepy airport in southern Brazil; we had to hunt
for the immigration officer to stamp our passports. This official stamped Anne's and mine readily, but riffled
through Jeremy's several times, looking puzzled. I asked what the problem was, and was told that he was looking
for the entry visa. "No entry
visa," I explained; "he was born in Brazil." "OH!" replied the official,
beaming from ear to ear. "E
Brasileiro!" ("He's
Brazilian!")
